The Nineties: A Glossary of Migrations
5 December 2019, The Museum of Yugoslavia, Belgrade. The catalogue was published to accompany The Nineties: A Glossary of Migrations exhibition that deals with the mass migrations of the population to and from Serbia over the course of the 1990s. The primary concern of the exhibition is to map the different forms of engagement, from the 1990s to the present, which have, in the field of art, activism and civil society, addressed social, cultural, political and legal issues created in these extremely complex and traumatic migration processes.
The catalog includes four essays dealing with the issues of the nineties’ political mythology, migration processes in the context of the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the perspective of EU immigration policies. The publication also includes an essay about the exhibition itself, explaining its structure and methodology, and positioning the artworks, activist and civil society organizations in the framework of the nineties glossary of migrations. Besides the essays, the catalog includes the Nineties Glossary of Migrations consisting of exhibition participants’ statements explicating select phenomena, syntagms and idioms, as well as accompanying texts that offer basic information on the wider context to which the artworks and activists’ initiatives refer and which were also made available in the exhibition.
